The life and times of a works canteen staff, located somewhere in the north of England. Simple stuff right enough, but in Victoria Wood's masterful hands this was one of the finest, bittersweet working-class comedies seen on British TV - female driven, á là The Rag Trade but as uncompromising as Steptoe And Son as it snuck into the darker side of life.
The staff are an interesting but 'normal' hard-working bunch. The manager, Brenda (known as Bren), is sensible and dedicated; Dolly and Jean are endlessly bantering, competitive middle-aged women; Asian girl Anita is gormless but well intentioned; and Twinkle is sluttish and sharp-tongued but decent underneath. In charge of this team, and perpetually baffled by female thought processes, is the easy-going Tony. He enjoys speaking in double entendres and making saucy remarks but this is ritualistic stuff, part of an old tradition and is taken in good spirit by the women. Then there's Stan, an officious handyman who can quote the rule book chapter and verse. With stories of his military past, and of his father's brave but rather pathetic struggles, Stan is a bit off the wall, but he too is a hard worker, fiercely loyal to the others and ensures the smooth running of the place. A regular visitor to the canteen is the company's human resources manager, Philippa, a southerner who has joined the firm in order to be close to her lover, Mr Michael, an older man in a management position. Philippa fights a losing battle to get the staff interested in extra-curricular bonding activities, such as Scottish dancing or flower arranging, but remains an optimist, only succumbing to mood changes later in the series. But capping them all is Brenda's mother, Petula, such a soiled specimen that you fear for the hygiene of the kitchen every time she drops in, which isn't often but occurs when she needs to cadge something. She is probably a bag lady, yet speaks of a lifestyle she inhabits exclusively with celebrities -sunbathing with George Clooney on his yacht, or touring Wales as a pillion rider on Johnny Depp's Harley.
